Nibbling at the whale

Welp, Sunday morning again, and just sitting down to write. I thought last week was more about the family than the house; this week I feel like I barely worked on the house at all 🙃

We put up Halloween decorations, which was super fun. All the time that we lived in New Hampshire, we lived in the trees, so there was little point in putting up exterior decorations. This also means our decorations are really meant to be inside, but I think we made it work (pictures forthcoming)! We’ll definitely hit the post-season sales this year to beef up our display for next year. Some folks in this neighborhood really go all out – I want to be a part of that ❤️👻!

One little nibble at the whale I was able to accomplish was putting drawer pulls on the sink base in the butler’s pantry. When my aunt remodeled the kitchen in the 90’s, she couldn’t decide if she wanted to match the pulls on the original cabinetry, or do something unique… 30 plus years later, they still had none 🙃.

In this photo, the top drawer only has been scrubbed, but not sanded or oiled

I guess you just get used to that sort of thing, because I don’t really remember it as a major issue before, and certainly my aunt, uncle, cousins, and all the other people who’ve lived here through the years managed it somehow, but after we’d lived here a few days it was completely driving us crazy 🤪😆. So, I picked some pulls that I thought my aunt would like, got her approval and got to work…six weeks later, because, well you know – we were doing all that other stuff!

Before installing the new pulls, I had to clean, of course! I emptied all the drawers, washed inside, and scrubbed at the drawer fronts with a green scruffy…when that clearly wasn’t enough, I scrapped off the years of grease and grime with a paint scraper 🙃. Once they were clean enough, I hit them with a fine grit sandpaper and polished them with linseed oil. Then I added the pulls – teapots, of course 🫖, oiled bronze to compliment both the wood and the brown tile. The wood is positively glowing, and soft and silky to the touch…it’s a genuine pleasure to use these drawers now 😄

I didn’t think to take before photos of the insides of the drawers, but I did take these pics of the contents just for fun!

James did some excellent work cleaning gross things in the basement – mouse infested bins of food and a moldy freezer 🤢

But this week was, much more so than last week, about things other than working on the house. James has made several sales on eBay, and continues to photograph things and put up new listings. I spent a lot of time learning to use video editing software…I got in hyperfocus mode and stayed up for 36 hours making a time-lapse video of emptying and refilling’s the closets in Iris’s room 😳🫠. It was actually a lot of fun. I hope the social media channels make some headway🤞 (don’t forget to give us a like and follow 😆🙃)

On Thursday, Iris turned 11! She had a very good, low-key birthday. We went to the tween meet-up at the library for the first time, and she had a blast. We’ll definitely be back! After that, we had Annie’s mac & cheese for dinner, with of course ice cream and cake for dessert! Iris has befriended a little girl who lives across the street, so we invited her, her mom and brother over. A good time was had by all – but we neglected to take any pictures🤷🏻‍♀️

I also spent some quality time with my aunt this week – we had a nice long soak in the hot tub, and Saturday we attended the No Kings rally and went to lunch.

All in all, in was a good week – productive time, family time, rest time, and community time. Thinking about diving into a project for next week 🤔

Elle, great to see you with your aunt (and UU T-shirt) at No Kings! Only you could add flair to that T-shirt! And great to see Iris’ dragons have found a well-cleaned new home. L, L

    1. Thank you, Leah! I found the hat and flower separately in my aunt’s things, I thought they were just perfect together – and with the shirt! You can’t see in the picture, but I was also wearing my Care Bear boots ❤️
